BIOGRAPHY
Marieke de Koker is a South African soprano, composer and director currently based in New York City. In 2022 Marieke joined the studio of Diana Soviero at Mannes School of Music where she performed in Mannes Opera's productions of Dr Sun Yat-Sen and In The Green. Marieke was a 2022 finalist of the Boosey & Hawkes International Sing Finzi competition and Concorso Internazionale Città di Alessandria. She is a recipient of the 2022 Alsop Entrepreneurship Award for her launch of a nonprofit database and publishing platform for Pan-African vocal music.
In 2021 Marieke made her South African national radio debut with RSG radio's broadcast of the Salon Music Christmas Concert with Brooklyn Theatre TV and Gauteng Philharmonic Orchestra. Marieke also appeared on national TV with her ETV Morning Show interview about her work as an Emerging Artist with the Windybrow Art Center's Aluta Continua series in honor of Nelson Mandela. 2021 saw the premiere of Marieke's first song cycle Never Again, based on works by the Kenyan poet Valentine Kizito. Marieke made her role debuts as Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte with Supernova Opera, as Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte with LAH-SOW Opera, and as Dido in Dido and Aeneas with DePaul University. She also appeared in multiple concerts with Johannesburg Opera and was involved with productions at SittOpera. Her engagements with Sempre Opera and Jerusalem Lyric Opera Studio were canceled due to COVID-19.
